The Halloween Man review: is the free C64 game worth the time?

THE HALLOWEEN MAN costs nothing and asks for a PAL Commodore 64 or an emulator. No independent hands-on review was found in the searches reviewed on 30 October 2026. This page is a first look built from the readme, the source package and the official screenshots.

What the design actually does

It is a dot-clear maze. You eat stars. Four monsters use different habits: the witch stays behind you, the vampire cuts ahead, the werewolf hangs back when you get close, and the pumpkin ghost is the wild card. A power star flips them blue. Chain-eating them scores 200, then 400, then 800, then 1600. Eaten monsters send their eyes back to the haunted house in the middle. That documented retreat-and-return loop gives prospective players a feature to compare, but we have not independently assessed its feel.

What is thin

The public source describes five maze layouts, each used twice. Levels 6 through 10 are the same maps with faster monsters and a shorter fright window. The source’s fright counter starts at 100 on level 1 and falls to 28 on level 10, ticking down every four frames. At 50 Hz that is about eight seconds shrinking toward a little over two seconds. The readme does not print those seconds, so I am marking them as a reading of the source, not a manual figure.

The developer’s technical sheet claims 100 percent 6502 assembly, 33 multicolour sprites, a three-voice SID, and a different wall colour on each stage. Those are developer-supplied specifications rather than an independent code-quality assessment.

The AI labels, stated flat

PDRoms says the developer mentions AI. CSDb flags AI-generated content on the cracked upload. The readme and the itch body text do not say it. I am not turning that into a verdict. If the label matters to you, read those two catalogues next to the author’s own files.

Should you spend the evening on it?

If you want a small, free PAL maze game and are comfortable setting up an emulator, its documented features make it worth considering. If you want a long campaign, new maps after level 5, or a reviewed consensus, those are not on offer yet. ready64’s other monster games (GHOST, WEREWOLF, DRACULA, WITCH 2) are the nearest cousins on the same itch profile. A clear time is still unpublished.

Questions

Are there reviews from other sites?

Not that I could find on 30 October 2026. YouTube search for the game showed the Ready64 trailer. A web search for a C64 review did not turn up a write-up.

How long does a full clear take?

No clear time was found in the sources reviewed. I am leaving that blank.
