Play The Halloween Man on PC or Mac with VICE
The official itch page does not list a playable browser build as of 30 October 2026. The practical path is VICE 3.10, set to a PAL Commodore 64, loading the free file from itch.
Get the file first from the download page, which points at itch. The VICE project itself lists version 3.10, GTK3, Windows 64-bit or macOS 12 and newer; these release details are a single official source.
Three ways to load the game
- Program file: the manual’s -autostart flag, or the Autostart button in the file selector, on THE_HALLOWEEN_MAN.prg.
- Disk: attach the .d64 and use the readme line LOAD "HALLOWEEN MAN",8 then RUN, or LOAD "*",8 then RUN.
- Tape: attach the .tap, type LOAD, start the virtual PLAY, then RUN.
Controls without a joystick
W, A, S and D move up, left, down and right. On the C64 keyboard, the two cursor keys give down/right, with Shift for up/left. VICE maps host keys onto that keyboard, so host arrow-key behaviour depends on its keymap. RETURN leaves the title and the instruction screen. Y and N answer PLAY AGAIN. If you do use the emulated joystick, VICE’s default numeric pad uses keys 1–9 for the eight directions and 0 for fire. The manual also says a host gamepad can be mapped to a C64 port. I am not writing a click-by-click settings path, because the manual pages I read do not spell that screen out.
If it does not start
Switch the model to PAL. The readme says the game was made for a PAL Commodore 64 and tested in a PAL emulator, so NTSC is not a supported target. If a disk load fails, try LOAD "*",8. A tape image needs the play control, not just a disk command. And the .prg is not a desktop executable.
Other emulators and real hardware
Hoxs64’s official site lists version 1.1.2.9 (24 July 2026), Windows 10 and DirectX 11.1; those are single-project details. VirtualC64 is a cycle-accurate Mac emulator; its official page documents PAL and NTSC emulation and PRG, D64 and TAP support. THEC64 is HDMI hardware with USB controllers and a built-in game set. Commodore’s own announcement dates the Commodore 77 to 25 August 2026 and targets shipping in early 2027 (single manufacturer source). I have no report of this game on THEC64 or the Commodore 77.
Is there an online version?
No game-specific browser build is linked by ready64. Browser C64 emulators do exist, including ports linked by VirtualC64; that does not give this site permission to re-host the game. When ready64 adds a playable frame on itch, the news page is where that change will be written down.
Questions
Do I need a joystick?
No. The developer readme lists W A S D and C64 cursor keys (Shift for up/left). Joystick port 2 also works, and port 1 is accepted.
Which VICE interface?
The VICE project recommends the GTK3 interface over SDL2. Version 3.10 is dated 24 December 2025.
